We envision informed, connected, and empowered communities where children and families have the knowledge, skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
At Literacy 1st, we view literacy as more than the ability to read and write. Literacy also includes understanding and navigating the information and systems that shape everyday life—from education and multilingual communication to housing, food and nutrition, health and wellness, technology, and community resources.
We work with families, educators, community organizations, and other partners to create accessible learning opportunities, strengthen family engagement, connect communities with resources, and help individuals build confidence in navigating the world around them.
Our Story
Founded in 2005, Literacy 1st, Inc. was established to help strengthen literacy and educational opportunities for children and families. In 2025, Literacy 1st received recognition from the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3).
Today, Literacy 1st focuses on literacy, family engagement, social-emotional learning, educational enrichment, and connecting families with resources that support children's learning and development.

Literacy 1st, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors whose collective experience spans education, organizational leadership, business operations, community engagement, and inclusive practices.

Sonja Sharif, President & Founder
Veteran educator and Assistant Principal with more than 30 years of experience in public education. She founded Literacy 1st, Inc. to expand educational opportunities, strengthen family and community engagement, and help children and families develop the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to navigate everyday life and thrive.
Phaedra Johnson, Secretary
Educator with experience in special education, early childhood education, inclusive instructional practices, and supporting the diverse learning needs of children and families.
Tamie Randolph, Treasurer
Human resources professional and Westchester County business owner with experience in organizational management, operations, compliance, and business administration.
